Current Legal Status of Hemp: February, 19 2020

The Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry (LDAF) finalized its hemp rules and regulations this week, and it published them in the Louisiana Register on February 19, 2020. License applications are expected to be processed quickly with licenses being approved as early as February 20, 2020.

With the regulations now in place, the Industrial Hemp industry is fully operational. Licensed growers can begin purchasing seed/seedlings for their 2020 crop, and growers and businesses who patiently waited at the starting line can get the jump on the competition.

Also, as of February 26, 2020, you can find listings of all of the currently issued industrial hemp grower, seed producer, contract carrier, and processor licenses at the LDAF website.


News Alert: December 27, 2019

USDA approves Louisiana’s state plan for industrial hemp. LDAF is now accepting license applications for Growers, Processors, Seed Producers, and Contract Carriers. Applications available at LDAF’s website. While applications are being accepted, it is expected that they will not be fully processed until late February 2020.

Hemp Licensing and Permits

Any person looking to grow, process, transport, or retail hemp and hemp derived CBD products in Louisiana must obtain an annually approved state license from the appropriate state agency before undertaking hemp activities. LDAF is currently accepting applications as of January 2020, and will be issuing those licenses beginning on February 20, 2020.

[NOTE: Retailers in Louisiana can currently sell hemp derived cannabidiol (CBD) products supplied from out of state as long as they obtain a temporary license from Louisiana Office of Alcohol and Tobacco Control.]
